The Florida Initiative in Teleheath and Education
was a new research program within the department of pediatric
endocrinology at Shands. The program headed by Dr. Muir and Dr.
Malasanos had a simple directive: use technology to help kids
learn about diabetes. To that end, I was hired as the go to tech
guy. My graphic duties included coming up with an identity for
the program. I was getting educated on diabetes realted stuff
myself, and was compelled to use my new found knowledge about
the pancreas, islets of langerhans and the alpha and beta cells
in my graphics. Which is what the abstract ribbon like structure
at the top is all about. Even the good doctors had trouble associating
it with said anatomical part, so we had to junk it. Next in store
was the apple and waves designs which were based on the premise
that apples represented education and good health (exactly what
we were trying to acheive by golly!), and the waves were of course
covered the "tele" part of the equation.
